Nordic postal operator PostNord is set to acquire another third-party logistics outfit, snapping up a 100% stake of two subsidiaries of Bilfrakt Bothnia.
The parent company of Post Danmark and Sweden’s Posten AB said that taking over Nordisk Kyl Logistik AB and Transbothnia AB would broaden the scope of its logistics business in Sweden, particularly in mixed cargo, goods consignment and coldchain logistics.
PostNord said the thermo and industry subsidiaries of one of northern Sweden’s largest logistics and transport companies had combined sales of around SEK 1bn in 2012.
The deal remains subject to approval from
The acquired companies employ 280 people, but mainly use external haulage contractors which have terminals in Luleå, Skellefteå, Umeå, Sundsvall, Östersund and Överkalix.
PostNord said haulage contractors used by the acquired firms will bring their current business to PostNord.
Adding the two divisions will expand PostNord’s overall logistics sales in Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark and Germany by nearly 7%. Logistics represents SEK 14.8bn worth of business to PostNord at the moment, around a third of the company’s revenues overall.
The latest acquisitions come after a string of logistics acquisitions for PostNord as it reshapes itself in the light of its declining core business, letter delivery. Last year the company bought the third party logistics business of Sweden’s Green Cargo.
Commenting on the latest move, PostNord head of logistics Henrik Höjsgaard said: “The acquisitions are a complement to PostNord’s existing logistics operations in Sweden and further strengthen the group’s position in the growing Nordic logistics market. We are increasing our presence in a key region and gaining a platform for growth within grocery and industrial logistics.”
PostNord said following previous acquisitions of mixed cargo and consignment freight businesses had been positive, with the development of long-term relationships with external haulage contractors.
Fredrik Persson, President and CEO of Bilfrakt, said: “At Bilfrakt, Thermo and Industry operate within a sector that is facing major challenges due to the structural changes that are underway – challenges that other market players are better positioned than we are to handle in the long term. PostNord was a first choice for us – a highly respected operator and a stable, long-term owner with the goal of strengthening its local presence.”
