Brazil Post partners Telebras in broadband network expansion

Monday, April 15th, 2013

Brazil Post has signed a deal to share technical expertise and infrastructure with state-controlled telecoms firm Telebras.

The cooperation agreement with the telecoms giant part-privatised in the late 1990s aims to improve the country’s broadband, telecommunications and universal postal service infrastructure ahead of two major sports tournaments being hosted in Brazil – the Confederations Cup 2013 and World Cup 2014.

Brazil Post’s president, Wagner Pinheiro de Oliveira along with the Telebras president Caio Cezar Bonilha Rodrigues signed the deal at Brazil Post’s headquarters in Brasilia last week.

The national postal service, which is fully state-owned, will be using its post offices as locations to help expand the presence of the Telebras telecommunications and broadband network.

Brazil Post said post offices would contribute to the expansion of the Telebras communications network, while the postal network would benefit from the enhanced telecommunications connectivity that the expanded Telebras network could provide.

This would include improved automation levels in the postal network, using web-connected technologies, and improved access to postal services that the broader Telebras coverage would allow.

Telebras would help deploy the infrastructure and provide training and experience to postal staff, while also working to upgrade Brazil Post’s own technology in order to continue improving the postal services provided for the population.

Digital inclusion

Pinheiro said the agreement came as part of the federal government’s commitment to revitalise the national postal service.

“This partnership will result in our continued technical development, in order to maintain excellence in providing our services, and create an environment conducive to universal digital inclusion of the Brazilian population,” said the Brazil Post president.

Bonilha said the support the Post Office was providing would be “invaluable”.

“We are both companies within the same Ministry. Our alliance with Brazil Post is essential for the process of decentralization and creation of eight Telebras operation centres in various parts of the country,” said the Telebras boss.
